FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHY GET A MASSAGE?
With so much happening to the body during pregnancy, support measures can go a long way in assisting Mum with a happy, healthy pregnancy. Massage may: soothe and relax nervous tension (stress can have significant impact on Mum and baby); reduce elevated heart rate caused by stress; soothe the parasympathetic nervous system; aid in waste product elimination through the lymphatic and circulatory system, reducing fatigue; aid circulation which supports balanced blood pressure and brings more oxygen and nutrients to mum and baby; ease muscular discomfort and improve range of movement; reduce thoracic and neck tightness, headache, oedema - swollen hands and feet; relieve depression and anxiety caused by hormonal changes; stimulate glandular secretions, stabilising hormone levels; improve muscular flexibility; regain strength post partum; improve quality of sleep; & most importantly allow mum to unwind, relax and enjoy pregnancy. CAN I GET A REBATE WITH MY PRIVATE HEALTH INSURER?
Depending on your private health coverage and your practitioner, you may be eligible for a rebate. If unsure, please ask.
CAN I GET A MASSAGE IF I HAVE:
Gestational Diabetes - we will discuss your management plan but this does not exclude you from massage.
Hypertension: mild chronic hypertension and gestational hypertension does not exclude you from massage. If your blood pressure is unstable or you have consistent high blood pressure of over 135/85 we will ask for written consent from your prenatal care provider.
Pre-eclampsia: we will ask for a medical clearance from your prenatal care provider. Early onset of pre-eclampsia can benefit from massage however this must be done in conjunction with your GP to ensure safety of both mother and baby.
Eclampsia: is a medical emergency and would exclude any massage.
Miscarriage: if you have had 2 or more previous miscarriages we recommend clearance from your prenatal care provider. No deep pressure or abdominal massage will be used.
Bleeding / spotting / abdominal pain: Massage is excluded until the bleeding has stopped and cause diagnosed.
Placenta Praevia: so long as there is no bleeding or spotting (please see above). If you have had bleeding or spotting and placenta praevia we will ask for a medical clearance.
Over 35: older women can have very healthy pregnancies. Like any pregnancy, medical clearance would be sought for any of the above issues including Foetal Growth Restriction and Poor placental flow.
Kidney Conditions such as UTI's and Cystitis: prenatal care review for diagnosis and treatment prior to massage is required. Any fever would exclude massage until resolved.
Asthma: Massage helps reduce stress and enhances gentle breathing, massage would only be excluded if you are having an asthma attack, until it has stabilised.
Nausea and Hyperemesis (morning sickness): Massage would only be excluded after an extended stay in hospital, dehydration and poor nourishment until it is stabilised and managed.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Thrombophlebitis: It is safer to refrain from massage if you have any blood clotting disorder. Written medical clearance and guidance would be required.
Varicose Veins: We would not massage around the vein site but this does not exclude you from massage.
Oedema: Lymphatic style massage can be very beneficial for anyone struggling with excess fluid, a very common complaint in pregnancy. For pitted odema we would ask you to see your prenatal care provider for clearance prior to massage.
Rhesus Factor (RH Negative Mother): so long as this is well managed, massage is fine. We would however work around the timing of your RH-immune globulin injections.
Cardiac Disorders: Medical clearance is required prior to massage.
Multiple births - (Twins): massage is highly beneficial.
